How to use it
- Choose a UUID version and how many identifiers you want, then click Generate.
- Copy the list of UUIDs.
- In the second tool type some text and choose a hash algorithm.
- Copy the hex hash.
UUID v4 or v7
UUID v4 is made almost entirely of random bits. UUID v7 begins with a millisecond timestamp, so identifiers grow over time. That helps as a database key, because inserts are more efficient than with purely random keys.
What hashes are for
A hash function turns any text into a fixed-length string. The same input always gives the same output, and recovering the text from a hash is practically impossible. They are used for file integrity checks and signatures.
What not to do with hashes
SHA-1 is no longer suitable for security purposes. Do not store passwords with plain SHA, use slow algorithms made for the job, such as Argon2 or bcrypt. We do not offer MD5 because the browser does not provide it.
