Password generator

Set a length, pick character types and generate a password. The randomness happens in your browser and the password never reaches a server.

—

Strength: Very strong · 128 bits of entropy

Your data never leaves your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

How to use it

  1. Set the length with the slider. For important accounts choose at least 16 characters.
  2. Tick the character types you want.
  3. Click Generate and copy the password.
  4. Store it in a password manager, not in a note or spreadsheet.

How the randomness works

The tool uses the browser's cryptographic random number generator rather than an ordinary random function. Characters are picked without statistical bias, and every ticked character type appears in the password at least once.

Entropy and strength

We express strength in bits of entropy, the base-2 logarithm of the number of possible passwords. Every extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed. Length raises entropy faster than adding rare symbols, so prefer longer passwords.

Good practice

Use a different password on every site, turn on two-factor authentication and keep passwords in a password manager. Do not type a password you already use here. This tool is for creating new ones.
